In an exclusive interview with Gun Trade Insider, Rob Gearing, the managing director of US-based Spartan Precision, available in the UK through Highland Outdoors, offered insights into the genesis and evolution of Spartan’s innovative products, driven by his personal experiences and professional expertise.
Rob explained that the impetus for Spartan originated from his own needs as an active participant in fieldsports. “Spartan came about because I could not find what I needed. I did not like having a bipod stuck to my rifle, it got in the way,” he said. This led to the development of the Javelin Bipod, which has gained global recognition for its innovative design, simplicity and functionality. Rob highlighted the uniqueness of Spartan’s approach: “The Javelin is stupidly simple in form and function — it just works and is what I use today!”
Discussing the vision behind Spartan’s latest range of products, Rob emphasised the importance of adaptability in diverse environments. “Our vision for our latest range of products is to provide the user with modular options. This means our customers can adapt to different environments. No other company in our sphere offers this,” Rob stated. This modular approach is particularly beneficial to users who face varying field conditions, allowing them to customise their equipment to meet specific needs.
Rob’s extensive background as a mountain hunter has profoundly influenced his approach to product development, especially concerning safety and reliability. “My background is climbing, where a failure of a product could cost you a life. I simply employ that same mentality with our shooting products,” he remarked. Spartan uses premium materials tested in the most extreme environments to ensure the highest standards of safety and performance.
The design and engineering process at Spartan is a collaborative effort, described by Rob as a “Democracy of Design.” The team comprises individuals from varied backgrounds, including hunting, defence and law enforcement. “Only when we are really content with a product does it come to market,” Rob explained. He shared that many ideas are developed and tested, but not all make it to production. This rigorous selection process ensures that only the best products reach the consumer.
Material selection is critical at Spartan, with a focus on durability and functionality. “We use the best materials we can find. I am not a believer in saving a few pounds on materials. I want the best,” Rob asserted. This uncompromising approach to quality is evident across all Spartan products, which are built to withstand the rigours of the field while offering peak performance.
Originality is central to Spartan’s ethos, with Rob noting, “Spartan’s DNA is innovation.” He elaborated on key technological advancements such as the Magna Switch and Disc Lok systems, which address specific user needs and enhance the modularity of the support platforms. “These innovations improve the user experience and performance by providing tailored solutions depending on the environment,” Rob added.
Before Spartan products are launched, they undergo extensive field testing conducted by a diverse team of testers from various countries. “Our products undergo thorough field testing before reaching customers, ensuring confidence in their suitability and quality,” Rob noted. This meticulous testing protocol guarantees that each product can handle the intended use cases and harsh conditions it will face.
Feedback from users and retailers is integral to Spartan’s development process. Rob emphasised the value of customer insights in refining products: “Many of the products that we sell today have evolved from customer feedback. We engage with a lot of users from different environments. This has been fundamental for product development.” He views all customers as essential contributors to the testing phase, whose feedback drives continuous improvement and innovation.
Looking forward, Rob shared insights into Spartan’s future direction, particularly their ongoing collaborations with military units which influence their civilian market offerings. “In recent years, we have collaborated extensively with numerous small military units worldwide, dedicating significant time to developing products tailored to their needs. Many of these new products will migrate over to the civilian market in time,” Rob disclosed. This strategy not only enhances Spartan’s product line but also ensures that they remain at the cutting edge of technology and user-centric design.
